Alberto Mizrahi (hebräisch: אלברטו מזרחי, geboren Ende der 1940er Jahre in Griechenland) ist ein US-amerikanischer Sänger jüdischer Musik. Er ist seit 1990 Kantor der Anshe Emet Synagoge in Chicago, tritt aber auch in Konzerten klassischer Musik auf, in Jam-Sessions, Klezmer-Konzerten und Crossover-Projekten.

Mizrahi entstammt einer sephardischen Familie, die bald nach seiner Geburt in die Vereinigten Staaten emigrierte. Er absolvierte seine Ausbildung am Kantorenseminar des Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City und wurde dort in der aschkenasischen Gesangstradition unterrichtet. Zu seinen Lehrern zählten die berühmten Kantoren David Kusevitsky (1911-1985), der aus Vilnius stammte, und Moshe Ganchoff (1904-1997), der in Odessa geboren wurde.

of Jewish music, is Hazzan of the historic Anshe Emet Synagogue, Chicago. He has thrilled audiences worldwide in recitals, symphony concerts, and opera. His repertoire, spanning nine languages, makes his performances unique in the field.

He is featured on PBS television in CANTORS: a faith in song, and the PBS Hanukkah Special with Craig Taubman. He has performed and recorded with the legendary jazz pianist, Dave Brubeck and his quartet (“Gates of Justice”) for the Milken Archive on the Naxos label, and with the great Theodore Bikel (“Our Song”) for Opus Magica. He has also performed with major symphony orchestras throughout the United States, Europe and Israel, including the Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Houston, Haifa, Jerusalem, Barcelona, NDR-Hanover, Lithuanian National, Radio Television of Spain, Krakow, Warsaw and others.

Hazzan Mizrahi recently performed in front of two U.S. Presidents; G. W. Bush, at the White House Hanukkah celebration and Barack Obama, at the U. S. Capitol for Days of Remembrance. He also premiered and recorded “Kadysz” for its composer/conductor, Krzysztof Penderecki in Poland.

The 2010/2011season found him at the Quebec Sacred Music Festival with his band, ZAHAV; as soloist in Lodz, Warsaw and Krakow Poland; as cantor for the ACDA Convention Friday night services in Chicago; and with the Saffron Caravan Ensemble in Chicago and the Kennedy Center DC; among many other concert appearances.

Highlights of his 2011/12 performances have included a debut appearance with Maestro Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra narrating the Schoenberg “Kol Nidre;” a return to Poland to perform with the Warsaw Philharmonic and Maestro Wit for two performances of Penderecki’s “Kadysz;” as well as collaborating with Roosevelt University at the Harris Theater in Thomas Beveridge’s “Yizkor Requiem” with the CCPA Orchestra and Chorus.

KLASSIK His extensive list of appearances includes a concert at the Capitol Rotunda in Washington; Auschwitz liberation commemorations in Hanover and Hamburg; and festivals in Kraków and Vilnius. In 1990, in London, he made his Royal Festival Hall debut in Voice of Jewish Russia; and at the 2002 Spitalfields Festival in London’s Christ Church, Spitalfields, he appeared with the BBC Singers in a program of Jewish music spanning several centuries. He made his Chicago Symphony debut in Penderecki’s Seven Gates of Jerusalem, sang with the New York Philharmonic in Paul Schoenfield’s Klezmer Rondos, and sang the tenor solo in the world premiere of Samuel Adler’s The Challenge of the Muse, with the Juilliard Symphony Orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall in 2003.

His debut appearance with Maestro Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, narrating the Schoenberg “Kol Nidre," received mention in the New York Times and has been released as a CD on the CSO label. He was a soloist in the Beethoven Society’s “Penderecki Festival,” in Warsaw, where he narrated the maestro’s 7th Symphony and sang his “Kadysz” with the Warsaw Philharmonic, as well as in Bialystok, Caracas, Graz, and on a televised performance (available on YouTube) in Warsaw, with Maestro Penderecki conducting.
