The Lambrettas are an English mod revival band, first active in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Named after the iconic Italian Lambretta scooter brand popular among Mods, the band was formed in Lewes. Their original line-up consisted of Jez Bird (singer/guitarist), Doug Sanders (guitarist/vocalist), Mark Ellis (bassist) and Paul Wincer (drummer).

Their biggest hit was in 1980, with a cover version of the 1950s Leiber and Stoller song, "Poison Ivy", which reached #7 in the UK Singles Chart.[1] They scored a #12 hit with the follow-up, "Da-a-a-nce". In the same year, they released the album Beat Boys in the Jet Age, which reached #28 on the UK Albums Chart, and scored another minor hit single single, "Another Day (Another Girl)" (hastily renamed from "Page 3" after complaints from The Sun newspaper.[1] After the Mod revival faded, subsequent singles, which included a 1982 cover of Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love", and a second album, 1981's Ambience, were commercial failures. The band played their final concert in their original incarnation in London on 14 April 1982. Bird re-formed the band for a time in the 1990s.

The band reformed in 2009 and are touring the UK and Europe.

History Early years (1970s–1980)

Dressing in matching mohair suits, the band named themselves after one of the mod-favoured motor scooters. The Lambrettas played various gigs around England until they were finally spotted by Elton John’s record label, the The Rocket Record Company. At the time, Rocket was a new label featuring new and unknown acts. It was through this label that The Lambrettas released their first single, Go Steady. The single did reasonably well and Rocket decided to sign the band to a longer term contract. Debut album

The band's next recording was a cover version of the 1950s song "Poison Ivy", which had been suggested to them by Pete Waterman, the business partner of their producer Peter Collins. The Lambrettas version had brass arrangements and a clear upbeat “Mod” feel to it. The single did well in the UK, reaching No. 7 on the UK Singles Chart.[1] It earned the band a silver disc, for sales of over 500,000 copies, and it was to be the band's best selling single.

The next single, "D-a-a-ance", was more typical of the band’s sound and it reached a respectable No. 12 on the chart.[1] With three singles released, the band then released their debut album, Beat Boys In The Jet Age; however, controversy occurred when the band attempted to release their fourth single, “Page Three”. The newspaper The Sun objected to the reference to its Page Three pin-up girl feature and forced a change of title, necessitating the destruction of all the manufactured sleeves. The album did do reasonably well, however, and due to this the band secured a spot supporting Madness on their European tour. Ambience and split

After the band's European tour, they released their second album, "Ambience". It was during this period that Steve Bray (former drummer for Toyah Willcox) replaced Paul Wincer. However, despite the album's high level of production and general solid feel, it was not a success. The band had tried to reach larger audiences by toning down on their mod image.

Throughout 1981, singles were released from the second album but all failed to make a major impact with the British public. Steve Bray was replaced by Pat Freyne and the band continued their struggle. By 1982 it was decided that they would record another cover. Jefferson Airplane's song "Somebody to Love" was chosen. Despite attempts to gain popularity through radioplay, the single did not chart.

By mid-1982, hopes of success had faded and the band parted with their record label and each other. In 1985 a best of album was released entitled Kick Start. Later work

Jez Bird re-formed the band in the 1990s, performing at small venues in England, and recording several demos for a new album that was never issued. In 1997 he re-recorded the band's hit "Da-a-ance". This featured on the compilation album, Generation to Generation,[2] released on the Dr. Martens Records label. He subsequently recorded a new version of the theme from TV series Starsky & Hutch, which featured on the Cult Themes from the 70s Vol.1 album, released in 1997.

Jez Bird died of cancer on 27 August 2008, at the age of 50.[3] Current line-up

Guitarist Doug Sanders and drummer Paul Wincer reunited to play a one-off gig as The Lambrettas at the "Modrophenia '79" event in Brighton on the 15 August 2009, with Doug Sanders taking over vocal duties. Joining them were guitarist Philip Edwards and Chris Venzi-James on bass. The band were well received and what was supposed to be a one-off gig turned into a full on return to form. The band have been busy touring the UK and Europe since and will be releasing new material in 2014.

The Lambrettas biography

The Lambrettas came into being in the late 70s. Doug Sanders and Jez Bird were playing in a band called Shakedown (who are still going strong today). They were looking for direction in keeping with their musical tastes, so split from Shakedown to start something new.

Both could sing and play guitar and set about writing. They were soon joined by like minded drummer Paul Wincer and bassist Mark Ellis. Doug says: “There were only a few Mods locally in Brighton and Hastings and we had no idea there would be a revival on the scale that it grew into. That’s when we decided to call the band The Lambrettas to make it as obvious as possible, so that people would know what we were about.” They suffered some criticism later on for their name but these were early days. They always maintained (and still do), that a band should be judged on their music first and foremost.

They soon realised there were other bands around like their neighbours The Teenbeats from Hastings, who are also still around and played with the Lambrettas at the 100 Club in London in 2009, as they did in 1979 at London’s Dublin Castle.

Their first gig was on Hastings Pier with 4 other bands, and promoter Peter Haines offered them management. After a few months of gigs they were signed to Elton John’s Rocket Records and released their first single Go Steady. This got them some airplay and soon they were gigging more regularly. The mod revival had now grown, and clothes that they used to fight for in the charity shops were now on sale in the High Street. Their second single was Poison Ivy, the song they are most remembered for, as it spent a long time in the charts. When the NME writers got together in 1989 to list their top 100 of the albums of the 1980's-Who would have thought a "79 Mod band would be in there alongside U2 and Bruce Springsteen? Beat Boys In The Jet Age is one of the best pop albums ever made, with one of the most imaginative sleeves. The Lambrettas would have worked on any audience, they didn’t need the mod credentials as a crutch. What a bonus we mods got them as our band.

Third single was Da a ance which coincided with UK and European tours. A full discography is on the website.

Fast forward to the mid 90s their back catalogue was re-released on CD, and they did a slot on C4s Big Breakfast and a few UK gigs.

Leap forward once again to 2007. Doug and Jez met up and discussed getting back together, but sadly soon after Jez became ill and lost a battle against cancer.

2009 saw the anniversary of Quadrophenia, and legendary mod Dave Wyburn asked Doug and Paul if the band would get together to do a short set at a Modrophenia event in Brighton. They initially thought it might be a bit weird without Jez, but were persuaded to give it a go.

Doug and Paul are now joined by two well suited and talented new generation players - Chris Venzi-James on bass and Phil Edwards on guitar. Mark Ellis lives in California, but is still in regular contact with the others. “We asked Mark to join us” says Paul, “but geography made it impossible.”

After the Brighton gig and it was clear that they were back together permanently. The phone started ringing, and they are now playing gigs up and down the UK and Ireland. The current set includes songs from the Beat Boys album, singles and a couple of homages. They are also writing and have started recording a new EP, which will be released later in the year. The music is as energetic and fresh as if they’ve never been gone.

Doug says “I understand that people see change in different ways, but with ongoing circumstances and the passage of time, it’s inevitable. As founder member (with Paul), and having been around since Day One, I’m reasonably qualified, and know everything that’s happened over the years regards people and situations in the band. The new guys – Phil and Chris, as well as bringing the average age down, are great players and performers, and nice guys. After a year or so back together, the band (in my opinion) is getting better and sounding tighter live, and we’ll have some new songs out later this year. “

“Certainly Paul or I wouldn’t want to be part of anything half-hearted, but as with all things, it’s a matter of opinion, and I hope people will come to gigs with an open mind and I hope they’ll find everything expected will be delivered and more.”
