Oberon microsystems was founded in 1993 as a spin-off of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zürich) and is located in Zürich, Switzerland.
Originally, the company created development tools for the programming language Component Pascal, a variant of Oberon.
1999 the company Esmertec was spun off, to distribute and further develop a Java hard real-time operating system for microcontrollers that Oberon microsystems has developed.
2010 Oberon microsystems ported Microsofts .NET Micro Framework to ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers and released this port as Open Source (NETMF for STM32).
2011 the company Yaler was spun off, to distribute and further develop a relay service that Oberon microsystems has developed.
2014 Oberon microsystems announced the Limmat project, an extensible platform for Internet of Things gateways.
2015 Oberon microsystems released OberonHAP, a licensable, optimized implementation of Apples HomeKit Accessory Protocol for the device side. This product, plus corresponding consulting and engineering services, are the core business of Oberon microsystems today.
Over the years, Oberon microsystems has done various Internet of Things customer projects, e.g. for the monitoring of hydro-power plants via Internet (Alstom Power) or the fine-tuning of hearing aids over the Internet (Phonak).
The computer science professor Niklaus Wirth is honorary member of the board of directors.
